Wednesday, 31st of August
7:30pm - 9.30pm
with Brian Malone & Gareth Quinn Redmond
To breathe is to absorb ourselves in what surrounds us, to take in little bits of life, understand them, and give pieces of ourselves back out.
"Respiration is, at its core, reciprocation" James Nester
Breathscape is a collaboration between ambient musician Gareth Quinn Redmond and yoga teacher Brian Malone. A movement practice designed to free up space in the body will lead into a breathwork practice, all soundtracked by a live performance by Gareth. The intention will be to mindfully explore how we can use our breathing to help us navigate the relationship between our internal environment and the external environment around us.
Suitable for all levels, but not complete beginners.
A little about breathwork: How you feel influences how you breath. How you breath influences how you feel. Breathwork explores this link. Our ability to consciously participate in our breathing offers us the opportunity to create simple but profound changes to how we feel on a physical, emotional and energetic level. Breathwork offers the guidelines for how to do so
A little about Gareth: Conceptually derived from the work of Japanese minimalist composer Satoshi Ashikawa, I write music which engages, enriches and reflects one’s surroundings – an environmental music. In the liner notes of his 1982 album Still Way, Ashikawa explains the concept of his work, and discusses how he sought to write music, which acted as an “object or sound scenery to be listened to casualty… it should drift like smoke and become part of the environment surrounding the listener's activity. In other words, it is music which creates an intimate relationship with people in everyday life.”
The above would go on to act as the conceptual framework for much of my work over the past few years, guiding me as to how best engage with the chosen environment and compose for one’s experience of it.
